Pipy

An armchair that explores a surreal harmony, a slim steel frame supporting
a fluffy cushion through precise engineering, selected for public installation.

Existing Balance

Most armchairs remain bound by a fixed proportion: slim frames with thin cushions, thick frames with bulky padding.
As a result, slender seats often lack comfort, while heavy frames feel visually dense and fail to blend harmoniously within a space.

The goal was to create an armchair suitable for contract environments. Combining a slim steel frame with a fluffy, voluminous cushion, the project sought a surreal harmony, a visual contradiction resolved through tilted angle of ergonomic comfort.

Surreal Balance

Challenges & Cooperation

To achieve a natural reclining angle while maintaining structural stability,
a circular support point was designed. Through close collaboration with engineers, the balance
between the slender frame and the generous cushion was structurally realized without compromising stability.

Stitched lines were introduced to reflect the slim pipe’s design language and achieve visual harmony.

Working closely with the upholstery team, every seam and detail was refined with precision.

By integrating engineering and upholstery processes, the design transformed its surreal balance into

a manufacturable structure. Pipy has been verified for contract use, ensuring both durability and comfort, and has been officially registered as Dongyeon Design’s finished product KS5711.
